Time zone task
This task was created because I had low ability year 10 pupils who needed to practice calculations with telling the time, but everything that I could find was incredibly babyish. I wanted something to stretch them and that might be useful. Since then, it has evolved and now become a very adaptable and enjoyable task!
My lesson for this goes something like...
Starter: basic identifying time on clocks and adding/taking away minutes and hours
Main part 1: Intro to time zones, why they are necessary, where they came from. Get an atlas from your geography department or print out the time zone map slide on A3, then ask pupils to put countries in order of when they celebrate new year.
Main part 2: worksheet of questions getting more and more tricky, ending with imagining how offices deal with opening hours or family members trying to be on skype at the same time all over the globe.
Plenary: Make a question or just show them the website in the power point, the international date like will blow their minds!
